Thanks, but I already know how to search for free web analysis tools. I am asking for peoples opinions on any ones that they already have used or heard about. I am looking for personal recommendations.

We use AWstats - really good I think. And relatively easy to setup.

I am getting server errors when trying to download a CAB file from a webserver.
I think the problem is that the default headers don't allow for CAB file mime type.
What string do I need to use in my call to
CHttpFile.AddRequestheaders(); to get this file?
I believe this is the problem, because if I change the URL to point to an HTML page, but leave everything else the same, then the file downloads just fine.
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm guessing that you need to include the header:
Accept: application/cab
so
CString szHeaders = "Accept: application/cab\r\n";
pFile->AddRequestHeaders(szHeaders);
Hope this helps,
Andy

Turns out I had the wrong path on my server DO'H!
But the CAB file thing still has me messed up because I don't know how to get it to automatically execute. If I try to download the single EXE file contained within it, I get a server error.
I tried "Accept: application/exe" for my header and my webserver throws an error.
How do you form the headers for an EXE file?

I often have to convert lengthy word document to html. Every time, I copy the doc to a text file, then format it to html, adding different tags, bold there, italize there, add a list somewhere. I often wonder if there is a better way, an efficient way to do this? I do not want to use office conversion tools, since there is too much, too much junky spaghetti code, which is very very hard to manage. So can someone let me how I am suppose to do it?

wrong direction. Not html-> word, but the other way around.

It's very simple. Save your file as Web Page from Microsoft Word.

That is the thing I want least. Have you ever looked at the tons of junkie code that is produced by word

Yes I know. But if you are using Office XP or Office 2003, you can always save as filtered web page which is much less messy than what is saved as web page. Then you can modify it to remove the junk code.
If you are using Office 2000, you can install freely available HTML Filter 2.0 from Microsoft that removes Office-specific tags. Download it here[^].
Also, read this KB article[^] on how to minimize metadata in Microsoft Word 2000 Documents.

Thanks. I guess there is just no easy way out, not yet.
I tried the filter thing, still quite messy to me. So I once wrote a program, using a lot of regular expression to detect tags and simplify the code. Then I got another problem, since word, so is the filtered html file, uses a different coding scheme and my program cannot recognize characters such as single quote, double quotes. That gave me a huge headache to put the quotes stuff back so I gave up my program.

You should touch up your program and submit in CP. It will be an useful tool for those looking for light-weight html conversion tool for doc files.

I am just starting out my own website. I've taken a snick peak at the perl syntax, i think it is the most abominable syntax i have ever seen. I am trying to become a viable webmaster in a few days, is it possible? Where do i start?

Start with plain HTML to get a feel for the structure, then start in with CSS for page layout and appearance. Once you have some skill in the basics you can add niceties like scripting. I use ASP and ADO right now, but PHP and MySQL are very popular, as well. A lot of sites use ECMAScript (javascript) still, and if you're used to C++ syntax, that might be a way for you to go. Of course, if you're wealthy enough to have VS.Net in your toolbox, you may as well jump head first into ASP.Net.
Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Forget wealth, you can go over to http://www.asp.net for ASP.NET Web Matrix - it's a superb ASP.NET dev. env. and best of all FREE
